Our midweek chart showcases a new question in GWI’s research which asks internet users when they next plan to purchase a mobile phone or upgrade their existing handset.
The mobile marketplace has seen major shifts in the last 4-5 years, not least due to the rapid rise of Chinese mobile brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. Just as we discussed in our Trends 17 Smartphone Squeeze article (download a free copy of the report here), our newest question confirms that it’s in APAC and the Middle East & Africa where we see the biggest potential for revitalized smartphone sales.
These figures also confirm that consumers in North America and Europe tend to upgrade at a much more leisurely pace and that smartphones have reached something of a saturation point in these markets. Upcoming devices will therefore need to demonstrate clear improvements upon their predecessor handsets to make an impact.
